In a nutshell

Canal+ (French for 'Channel Plus') is a French premium pay television channel, owned by the Groupe Canal+ , which was owned by Vivendi and is now owned by Telefónica. As UX Consultant with FJORD, Madrid, I ceated a UX concept for the Spanish Canal+ relaunch of the VoD (video on demand) portal on web, mobile and tablet.

Renting or buying on-demand video content means users have to work through a long attribute selection process.

I created a UX/UI system I called ‘semantic browsing’ to tackle this problem.

Research

User Research and Persona journey mapping

The existing site lacked the ability to adequately track retention, sessions, device type and churn. I started by creating an analysis of user watching behaviour across time and devices. It was based on existing quantitative user research programs, to which I added the findings of 8 user interviews that I conducted. I arranged the findings on weekday and weekend timelines with viewing behaviour and device type used.

CX/UX

UI Strategy, Sales Funnel Concept

As a result of my research, I replaced an existing 4 Screen Strategy with an 8 Use Case Strategy divided into three behaviour types: rest, react and interact, which determine viewing length and content interaction. On this conceptual basis I created a semantic browsing model as sales funnel concept guiding users through a set of steps to choose the right video content in the right format with the right purchase or rent option in the right package option.

Feature Design

Functions, features, terms

Building a proprietary video player can often mean building unnecessary features that are rarely used, but expensive to build. I created this player feature analysis and recommendation to allow the team to decide on which feature to build, and which to skip. I also created a terminology concept to reduce misunderstandings in the team about purchase model and player features.

Templates, Components, Modules

I then created a UX/UI construction framework with templates and components that allowed the client to assemble all pages with it. It also served the UI designer as basis to create the UI
